Understanding RTA Cabinets: What They Are And Why They Cost Less
A plain-English guide to ready-to-assemble cabinets — how they ship, how they're built, and how they compare to stock and custom cabinetry.
RTA stands for ready-to-assemble. Instead of arriving fully built like traditional stock cabinets, RTA cabinets ship as a flat-pack kit: pre-finished plywood panels, doors, drawer boxes, and hardware packed into a single carton per cabinet. They snap and screw together on-site in about 15 to 25 minutes per box.
For most South Florida kitchens, condos, and vanities, RTA is the highest-value option on the market — furniture-grade materials and modern hardware at stock-cabinet pricing.
Why RTA costs less than pre-assembled cabinets
The economics are simple. A pre-assembled 36" base cabinet takes up roughly six times the freight volume of the same cabinet flat-packed. Assembled cabinets also sustain far more shipping damage, which manufacturers price into every unit.
By shipping flat, RTA manufacturers cut freight cost, warehousing cost, and damage claims. Those savings pass through to you as a lower shelf price — typically 30% to 50% less than a comparable pre-assembled cabinet made from the same materials.
How RTA cabinets are built
Every Mod Cabs box is full plywood. The sides, back, top, deck, and shelves are all real furniture-grade plywood — not particle board or MDF. Doors and drawer fronts are solid plywood or veneered plywood with a factory-applied finish. Nothing in the box is fiberboard.
Construction is frameless (also called Euro-style). There is no face frame across the front of the cabinet, which means door and drawer openings are larger and interior storage is roughly 15% greater than a comparable framed cabinet of the same nominal size.
Hinges are 6-way adjustable and soft-close. Drawer glides are undermount, full-extension, and soft-close. Every cabinet ships with the correct hardware, wall cleats, and toe-kick material for its size.
RTA vs. stock vs. semi-custom
Stock cabinets are pre-assembled, typically particle-board core with a thermofoil or laminate face, and sold in fixed sizes. RTA cabinets share the fixed-size approach but upgrade the materials to plywood and the hardware to soft-close, while cutting cost by shipping flat.
Semi-custom cabinets are made to order in 1/4" or 1/8" width increments with a wider door-style catalog. They cost roughly 2-3x RTA and take 6-10 weeks to arrive. For 95% of modern South Florida kitchens, RTA in a stock size handles the layout cleanly.
Who RTA is for
RTA works best for homeowners and contractors who want modern styling and furniture-grade materials without waiting weeks for a semi-custom order. It's the standard for South Florida condo renovations, rental turnovers, ADUs, guest baths, and full new kitchens where budget matters.
It's not the right pick if you need highly unusual dimensions that can't be handled with fillers, or if you want a hand-painted, hand-glazed traditional style — those are semi-custom problems.

Yes. Once assembled with cam locks, dowels, and screws, a plywood RTA cabinet is structurally identical to a pre-assembled cabinet of the same materials. The joinery is the same — you're just doing the final fastening on-site instead of in a factory.
What tools do I need to assemble RTA cabinets?
A #2 Phillips screwdriver (or drill with a Phillips bit), a rubber mallet, and a tape measure. Everything else — cam locks, dowels, screws, wall cleats — ships in the box.
Are Mod Cabs cabinets made of particle board?
